Latin 2 Second Quarter Culture Project: Occupations Project
Due Date: Monday, November 30, 2009

Read pages 344-45 in your text book. Decide upon what profession/occupation you would like to learn more about and how to convey your new-found knowledge to your class in a presentation. Fill out the slip on the next page with the required information. Note that a parent’s signature is required. Teacher approval of career choice is also required. (Get my approval before having your parent sign the slip!) Once your topic has been approved, you cannot then change it without prior teacher approval of this change.

Having made your decision, you should do the following:
1. Research what your profession/occupation was like. Who would have been allowed into the profession/occupation? How would the person have been trained? What would your status in society have been? Where would you have lived? What would your typical day have been like? How much would you have been paid for your work?
2. Keep working notes on your research including information for a bibliography. Your working notes will be checked November 5.
3. Create a typed Bibliography of your sources. Your bibliography will be checked November 12.
4. Work up a skit or presentation of no more than five minutes in which you will present your work and life in your chosen profession/occupation to your class. You must turn in a typed version of your presentation. You may use props, costumes, posters, or any other appropriate aids. You will find these enhance the impression of the presentation. You will be graded upon your presentation as well as your demonstration of your understanding of the information. Give the project some thought and be creative! Your rough draft will be checked November 19.

Each check point is worth 25 quiz points. The entire project is equal to a full test grade. The entire project is due November 30, 2009. Plagiarism on any part of this project will result in a grade of ‘0’ for the entire project and school administrators will be notified.

Suggestions for sources:

There are a large number of books on all the topics for your report already on reserve for your class in the WHHS library on a book cart marked "Ancient Rome." Most can be checked out overnight. Use these first! Several ones that will be particularly good for this project are:

Handbook to Daily Life in Ancient Rome
What Life Was Like When Rome Ruled the World
Usborne Encyclopedia of the Roman World

Be patient! You may have to look in many sources to find enough information!

For additional information, you may want to use the following web sources. Several that you will particularly want to use are:

NOTE: DO NOT USE INFORMATION OR SITES FROM "MR. DONN," WIKIPEDIA, OR "CRYSTALINKS:" THESE CONTAIN FACTUAL ERRORS!!!!

Ancient History Online: All about the cultures of major ancient civilizations, including Rome. You will need a password from home. User name: walnut ; password: hills.

Ancient Roman History- This has VERY basic (but accurate) information about all aspects of life in ancient Rome; a good place to get started.

The Roman Empire Net- This is a good source of information about the Roman world. Look in Society , and then under "The Working Day" and "Industry."

Gladiator On the Web- Lots of information about real and movie gladiators, plus links to other sites.

Roman Life on the Web- The online text of one of the best books on life in ancient Rome, Mary Johnston's Roman Life. Use the section on Sources of Income.

Ancient Romans- Use the section on Roman jobs.

I have chosen the following profession/occupation on which to report and present:
