Summer Assignments

You must have these assignments completed by the first day of class or your acceptance into the class will be re-evaluated. Complete all work during June and July to keep your skills sharp and prepare for the amount of rigor that is required for AP. Do not wait until august to get this done. If you need help please contact Miss Williams by email (WilliPe@cpsboe.k12.oh.us) and she will work with you on the assignments. ?You can take Digital pictures of your work and email them for a critique of your work before school starts.
1. Pick up 3 trading card storage sleeves from Ms Williams by May 22, 2009. ?Each storage sleeve holds 9 spaces for individual 3½ by 2½ inches works of art.
The summer assignments will all be small works of art work 3½ by 2½ inches. ?Be creative and inventive Keep the work 3½ by 2½ inches. Try as many different ideas as you can, but fill 3 trading card storage sleeves or more of your small art works for a minimum of 27. The work must be original and have a variety of mediums and styles. You can purchase more storage sleeves at any office supply store. You must do the sketchbook assignment?.
?Ideas to get you started?" Create small works of art using the Elements and Principles of Design listed below. Use any media or medium you wish. But keep the work the size of a trading card. 3½ by 2½ inches the direction you turn the paper is up to you as the artist. Be as creative as possible. See how well you can depict these words without using the words. ?Use marker, pencil, pen and ink, digital design, mixed media etc. ?The elements of design are line, shape, color, texture, value, form The principles of design are movement, balance, repetition, rhythm, contrast, emphasis and unity. (Create as many of these as possible some may have text.)
" Design new products. (Robot toasters, air car, electric toilet, can opener.) Detail drawings add some kind of text. Use pen and ink or fine line black marker.) Keep the size 3½ by 2½ inches. (Create 3 or 4 versions of this idea.)
" Create collages using cut and torn papers of various textures and colors to create a sense of dimension and shadow areas. Create 2 or 3 versions of this idea.
" Purchase a new sketchbook (Label it Studio Art AP 2-D Design 2009-10)The sketchbook can not be larger than 9"x12" or smaller than 5" x 7" You are a 2-D designer fill the sketchbook/ journal with your 2-D design ideas, writings, thoughts, reference ideas, clippings and other designs you find interesting and creative. This is a sketchbook/journal not a book of completed designs. Take this with you everywhere during the summer (never be without it) and bring it to class the first day of school. This will be of great help to you next year.

SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS

You must have these assignments completed by the first day of class or your acceptance into the class will be re-evaluated. Complete at least one work every 2 weeks through the summer to keep your skills sharp. If you need help please contact Miss Williams by email (WilliPe@cpsboe.k12.oh.us) and she will work with you on the assignments.
1. Create a sculpture made of multiple objects. This collection of objects should create a recognizable subject such as a human figure, animal, or some object. The height of this structure should be at least 6 inches. All parts must be attached permanently. The presentation must be dimensional from all sides, not just frontal.
2. Remake a master's work using an entirely different medium than that of the sculptor's original work. An example would be to make a copy of Michelangelo's "David"' by using bottle tops. Another, would be to make a copy of a famous building ' clothes pins or paper clips. Structure must be 10 inches tall or more.
3. Create a subtractive sculpture from a block of plaster. This structure can be abstract with an emphasis on positive and negative areas. Rotation of the structure should reveal a balanced composition on all sides. Plaster can obtain at the craft store where building supplies are sold. (Create a sculpture of any style. ?*Alternate - You can do this instead of the plaster assignment. Create a sculpture that can communicate a single strong emotion (anger, sadness, love, jealousy, remorse, hate, happiness etc.). The results must be visually balanced and visually speak to the emotion. Do not use text to communicate your idea. Use any media and style. (Wax, wood, cardboard etc.)
4. Create a human bust (head neck and shoulders) by using balled up newspaper and masking tape. Construction should begin with a ball of newspaper, which is layered and layered with more paper, and tape until it is life size. Add a roll of paper intertwined within it to make a supporting neck. The surface can be covered with tape as the facial features are created. The surface can be tape or any materials or objects you choose. (Example- hair can be a stream of tape or yarn or wire). Total height should be at least 12 inches,
5. Purchase a new sketchbook (Label it Studio Art AP 3-D Design)?The sketchbook cannot be larger than 9"x12" or smaller than 5" x 7"?(It must have at least 25 pages.) You are a sculptor; fill the sketchbook/ journal with your 3-D design ideas, writings, thoughts, reference ideas, clippings and other sculpture you find interesting and creative. This is a sketchbook/journal not a book of completed designs. Take this with you everywhere during the summer (never be without it) and bring it to class the first day of school. This will be of great help to you next year.
6. Go to an art museum or sculpture garden and look at sculptures. Purchase 2 books about sculpture and sculpture techniques to use during the summer and in the AP class. Identify what style of sculpture you like and what sculptors you admire. 3. Create series of portraits of people. You may want to use individual photos as references for body positions and character. Pay close attention to proportions and value structures. Strive for a range of color and placement. Use color pencil on a medium colored paper. Some can just be head and shoulders some full body, try abstracts as well as realistic. Try parts of faces, eyes, ears, and half faces. Etc.
4. Examine a small area in nature. Create a composition involving foliage. Seek a variety of plant shapes and tones. These drawings should investigate different textures, surfaces and shapes in nature. Use a deep colored paper surface to apply oil pastel and /or color pencil. (Can be done with oil or acrylic) Create 3 or 4 versions of this idea.)
5. Create drawings of tools or similar objects. Arrange the objects in a creative way to create an engaging composition. Augment the lighting to create maximum contrast and high shine areas. Explore the smallest detail of each object. Use white paper with pen and ink (black ballpoint)"?a. Create 3 or 4 versions of this idea.)
6. Create an urban landscape. Show perspective and an understanding of light and shadow on the architectural structures. Manipulate the actual colors to their opposites or complements for stronger shadow areas. Use any color medium. Create 3 or 4 versions of this idea.)
7. Purchase a new sketchbook (Label it Studio Art AP Drawing sketchbook/ journal)?a. The sketchbook cannot be larger than 9"x12" or smaller than 5" x 7"?b. (It must have at least 25 pages.) Fill the sketchbook with your drawing ideas, sketches, writings, and reference ideas, photos that are taken by you that can be used as ideas. This is a sketchbook/journal not a book of completed drawings. Take this with you everywhere during the summer (never be without it) and bring it to class the first day of school. Photography (Design) Portfolio
Summer Assignments

You cannot choose this portfolio if you have not taken Photography 1 and 2. ?This is a design portfolio; photography is the medium you use. ?You need a background in design and photography in order to be successful. ?Talk to Miss Williams before you choose this portfolio it requires training and extreme commitment to the work.
PHOTOGRAPHY ASSIGMENTS CAN BE 35 MM OR DIGITAL. ?DIGITAL CAMERAS MUST BE 4 OR MORE MEGA PIXEL CAMERA ?All digital picture's must be saved and printed
You must complete the assignments by the first day of class or your acceptance into the class will be re-evaluated. Complete all assignment and take pictures all summer to keep your skills sharp. If you need help please contact Miss Williams by email (WilliPe@cpsboe.k12.oh.us) and she will work with you on the assignments. All pictures must be developed and printed before the start of school. Norton's Photography can develop black and white film.
1. Digital or 35 mm Photography - color and or black and white. ?The summer assignments will all be completed small works of art 4 by 6. ? Try as many different ideas as you can but a minimum of 4 rolls of film 24 or 36 exposures or 100 or more digital. The work must be original and have a variety of styles and approaches. Digital Photography artist must purchase a flash drive or storage device to store work. All work must be developed and printed. Contact sheets are acceptable
2. Take pictures of lights on industrial structures such factory towers and/or architectural structures such as urban apartment buildings or houses. Use a tripod and 400-speed film or use a digital camera with its proper settings. These pictures should emphasize the effects of light on a dark setting (at night). Develop and or print.
3. Take, a picture involving the three primary colors, three secondary colors. Make sure that the composition works well so that not just one of the colors is the dominant color. Make sure there is even pairing of the 3 colors. This is a design project as well as photography you may need to arrange the shot by gathering objects that have the primary or secondary colors in them.
4. Take abstract pictures of different parts of the body (Keep it clean). Uses dramatic studio lighting. Use a black background. (Look for interesting, shape, space, color, line, and contrast, balance, movement.
5. Take a series of architectural shots using a variety of camera angles to convey an understanding of perspective. The set should focus on one structure to show continuity but from different sides and views. Use black and white film or digital photo to isolate the perspective as the focal point. This set should consist of 8 or more prints. (Bridges, overpasses, playground equipment etc.)
6. Take a roll of 400 print film/ Digital using the words listed below shoot at least 3, pictures for each word. Line, Shape, Space (positive and negative) Color, Texture, Value, Form, Movement, Balance, Repetition, Contrast, Rhythm, Emphasis and Unity
7. What is abstract photography? Look up abstract photography on the Internet. (It will help you answer this question.) Shoot a roll of film or digital pictures that shows abstract images. Identifying the object is not the point here. Look at objects differently and use strong composition design elements and principles. 10 to 15 pictures
8. Keep a photography journal (Sketchbook) Keep shot settings, Ideas, interesting places, technical information, and picture information in the journal. This will be of great help next year. Bring to class first day of school.
9. A Jump (Flash) drive is required for this class. It must be 2 gigs or more of storage
Photoshop CS is used in this class if you familiarize yourself with this or other photo editing programs it will help you be successful in Studio Art AP.
There are many photo sites that can give you help and information. Check the site of the camera you own for ideas, help and technical information. Canon, Sony Pentax etc.
