Activity on Active Volcanoes and Volcanic Regions throughout the World

7th Grade Earth Science
Chapter 9: Volcanoes

Volcanoes and People Library Research Assignment

Choose a volcano or volcanic region to research. Find several articles on it using the procedure you learned today. You will then write a summary using your articles and present this summary to your class.

Make sure to include the following information in your summary:
• A brief description of the volcano
o Where is it located
o What does it look like
o How tall is it
o Any other interesting facts about your volcano you wish to share
• Identify the type of volcano
• When it last erupted
• How long the eruption lasted
• How did this eruption affect the people living in the area (was it harmful, helpful, or a combination of both)

Be sure to include specific details about your volcano. Your summary should be one typed page. Your article or articles that you choose to use should total at least 3-4 pages.

To find information on your volcano:

1. Look in the books on reserve for your class:

There will be books on very famous volcanos, and books about volcanos in general.

2. Look in the National Geographic index for articles about your volcano (Look under "volcano").

If your volcano has had a major eruption since 1895, there will be a report in National Geographic about it; use the paper index for 1895-1988; from 1991 to the present, use an online service like Newsbank, EBSCOHost, or Gale Student Resource Center to find the article. Between 1989-1990, you will have to look at the individual issues of issues of National Geographic.

3. Use an online magazine index to find an article.

Newsbank- search by the name of your volcano and choose "all articles." Username and password:7675

Gale Student Resource Center- search by the name of your volcano. Username and password: cinc48953

EBSCO Host- Choose this from the Grades 9-12 menu on Infohio; then choose "Student Research Center." Then search by the name of your volcano. Username:think password:infohio

4. Look for the website information on your volcano:

These websites will have information on all volcanos:
A. Global Volcanism Project from the Smithsonian Institute-search by the name of your volcano.
http://www.volcano.si.edu/

B. Volcanos Alive-search by country
http://www.volcanolive.com/world.html

C. Images of Volcanos-from Oregon State University-search by region of the world, and then volcano name.
http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/vwdocs/volc_images/

Look for your volcano by country and then name for a website just on it:
